Research Interests
We are interested in understanding how to fabricate, assemble, and utilize nanometer scale structures, and we develop this science through extensive industrial and academic collaborations. One project involves trying to learn how to chemically synthesize a computing machine that exhibits robust operation near the thermodynamic limit for nonreversible computation. We have developed realistic architectural approaches, and we have demonstrated a number of firsts, including the solid-state molecular switches, molecular-based logic and memory circuitry, and zero-lithography approaches toward fabricating deterministic circuitry. Within the next couple of years we hope to have a molecular based computing machine. Another project is aimed at understanding the nano-circuitry of biological systems. We are developing chip-based techniques for patching single cells, or artificial bilayers containing single transmembrane proteins. We are also developing analytical techniques for obtaining optical, electrical, and chemical access to either side of the cell wall or bilayer, as well as ultra-sensitive sensors for probing transport through these natural and artificial systems.
